A visual routine is a shared place to look.

Use pictures, words or both. The aim is not perfect independence; it is a routine your child can understand and you can support consistently.

A small place to begin

  1. Start with a real moment, not an idealized whole day.
  2. Use the level of detail that makes the next step clear.
  3. Tell your child about changes before they appear in the routine.
